Mental Health on Campus

Much has been written lately about campus killings, suicides and overall mental health issues. This post aims to provide some background information and statistics to help everyone make sense of it.
In America approximately 1,300 students on college and university campuses take their own lives although college students are less likely than other demographic groups to commit suicide. Nevertheless, as a result of the growing number of kids with mental health issues who enroll in college and increasing stress as part of college life, suicide is the second highest cause of death on campuses. Females attempt suicide 3 times as often as males, but males complete suicide 3 times as often as females.
Why? Although there is not a definitive answer, some of the most frequent reasons given include: the sometimes difficult transition to college life, overwhelming academic and social pressures, substance abuse, breakups, isolation and the stigma attached to mental illness.
Keenly aware of this issue, campuses all over the country are starting to increase and improve their mental health services.
