Anxiety on Campus
An audit of mental health care at America’s top 50 colleges and universities reports an increase in student usage of mental health services over the past three years. The survey, conducted by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, found that students at national universities use campus mental health services at a lower rate than students attending liberal arts colleges (13% vs. 23%).
The schools report that a growing number of students are starting college with a history of mental illness and increased awareness of mental health issues. More than one fifth of the schools saw an increase in the number of students seeking treatment at campus facilities who were already taking psychiatric medication and all schools reported an increase in students seeking treatment for anxiety disorders.
The ADAA audit mentions a recent national survey by Penn State, which found that 60 percent of university health center directors reported record umbers of students using campus counseling services and they were using them for longer periods of time than in the past.
