Perkins Student Loans
The president sent his Fiscal Year 08 budget request to Capital Hill this week and again, called for the complete elimination of the Federal Perkins Student Loan Program. This campus-based program provides low-interest loans to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Loan funds are provided through new Federal Capital Contributions, institutional matching funds, and repayment from prior borrowers. The Perkins Loan program also fosters a national good through its loan cancellation provisions for public service employment in teaching, nursing, social work, childcare, and law enforcement careers.
Grassroots actions are underway to persuade Congress to keep the program alive. We will keep you posted as things develop.
